Hey FlexR backers,
Thank you to everyone that helped make this campaign successful!
We truly couldn't have done it without your support. We're so excited to keep moving forward and give you guys your FlexR packages!
So, what happens next?
Here's a quick look into how the next couple weeks will pan out.
Two Week Window
Kickstarter has a 2 week window after the campaign ends where they hold all funds from the campaign. For us, this means February 20th, 2 weeks after our end date of February 6th.
At the end of this window, Kickstarter will charge us their fee and payment processing fees and wire the remaining funds to us, following a 1-2 day holding period.
For those that had their credit cards rejected, please correct your credit card information within Kickstarter before this Monday, February 13th. If it remains uncorrected, I won't be able to send out your FlexR packages.
After this two week window, I will be posting a detailed update about the Post-campaign surveys I will be sending you. These surveys will allow you to confirm your order details and provide your shipping address, so be on the lookout.
Until then, please let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks,
Ricky & The FlexR Team

FlexR X Jason Becker

Hey FlexR backers,
In case you missed our last update, we have teamed up with heavy metal guitarist and composer, Jason Becker, whose suffered from ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's disease – Do you remember the “ice bucket challenge”?) for 30 years.
FlexR X Jason Becker
When we launched the FlexR campaign, Jason’s friend reached out to our team to see if our technology could help Jason to compose, and potentially help other people suffering from muscle control issues. I said Yes!
So I was invited to Jason’s place where we were introduced to each other.
Jason doesn’t have control over speaking muscles, so he communicates with eye movement by looking at an imaginary “keyboard”, which is then spelled out by his caregivers. I was a little nervous at first, but Jason cracked a few jokes and I learned soon that Jason is such an easy-going rock star! I was also really impressed by the piece of BEAUTIFUL music he composed in such a limited situation!
Originally I thought I could probably use his facial muscles to help him compose and control the appliance. But when I did a thorough interview, I was excited to find out that Jason has control over both his calf muscles! This is extremely meaningful because:
1) Jason uses facial muscles to express “yes/no” – so I didn’t want to mess with the effective communication
2) Endurance of the calf muscle is usually quite good. Because energy is one of the limitations of patients with ALS, the usage of calf muscles can help minimize this limitation.
So, I coordinated with our tech team and came up with this first prototype that plays music with calf muscle activation.
We’ve filmed the initial process of Jason using his ankles to produce an audio effect! We mapped guitar string and piano notes to the EMG reading 0-2000, which allows Jason to produce with his calf muscle. His calf muscle can produce an export of strings from 0-3000 EMG reading, which can be used to compose input or Internet of Things(IoT) input such as turning on and off the light, turning up and down the speaker volume, etc.
See for yourself!
We want to use our technology to enable people to express themselves in a more intuitive way and break the boundary of physical limitation.
Jason has incredible ideas and beautiful music in his mind, but due to ALS, he just cannot express it. This is what we are aiming to fix. Jason feels lucky to be surrounded by so many great people who take care of him. He knows that not every patient has the luxury of this type of support, so he hopes this technology can empower and help many more people.
I can imagine that there are many, many people with beautiful minds and awesome ideas hidden in their brain, limited not only by ALS but other physical ailments like paralysis, caused by other motor control impairments.
We want to help them with our technology.
Jason wants to help them by providing his insight about what people with disability might need, and of course with his beautiful music.
In honor of Jason Becker and fighting ALS, we have opened up 2 new rewards on our campaign page!
1) Pledge $9 - Fight ALS Reward
- Pledge will be used to bring the app and technology designed for people with paralysis to life.
- 10% of the pledge will be donated to ALS association (http://www.alsa.org)
2) $109 - FlexR Fight ALS Special Edition:
- Original FlexR Super Early Bird package ($99)
- There will be a special label on FlexR’s package.
- 10% of the pledge will be donated to ALS association (http://www.alsa.org)
Life is up and down, just like music. But technology can enable people to express themselves in a more intuitive way and overcome their physical boundaries.
Help us bring these technologies to life and help more people, exercise and beyond.
Thanks,
The FlexR Team
